State Journal: W.Va. nursing shortage said to be ‘worst ever’
A number of West Virginia hospitals are desperately seeking to fill nursing positions.
Nursing shortages aren’t new. Hospitals have seen them in the past. But this one seems far worse and threatens to be long-lasting. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there will be more than a million job openings for registered nurses by 2024, twice the number in past shortages.
Contributing factors to the shortage is the aging of the baby boom generation while a greater number of patients seek care.
